Math-This next week, we will introduce the concepts of multiplication and division. You'll need plenty of counters on hand -please don't skip the concrete portion of these lessons. There is a heavy emphasis on students understanding the idea of 3+3+3+3=3x4 so working that concept into your lessons will be beneficial to students. The other concept is that of an array. This terminology isn't introduced until lesson 6, but you'll see hints of it before that in the chapter and then quite a bit in Chapter 7. We'll be using them in class, but students should be well acquainted with that terminology as well as how to use one. Please also continue to use the word equation-students should know what we're asking them to do when we ask them what the equation for a problem is. Reinforce the concept of equal groups. When we multiply we are finding a total. When we divide, we start with a total and are finding the number in each group (or how many groups). I also highly recommend making flash cards for multiplication and division of 2, 5, and 10. By the end of second quarter, students will be expected to have those facts memorized up to 10.
