Math- Chapter 8 assessments were sent home last week. I highly recommend working through the missed problems if your student received a 1 or a 2 as a score. Students were allowed to use any strategy, including rewriting in vertical addition and subtraction on the test. Please review the process for math facts found in the journal. If students don't finish their page at school, they need to finish it the next day at home in addition to the math fact practice for that day.
Reading-Our first OPG assessments of the semester were completed and sent home last week. Overall, I'm very impressed with the progress shown! By far the most common trouble spots are in 3 and 4 syllable words. Many students sound out the first sound and then guess at what they think the word is. This is why it's very important to have the students reading out loud to you so you can talk them through sounding out those longer words.
Grammar- I find the best way for student's to learn subject pronouns and possessive pronouns is just to memorize the list of each (in chanting form or the jingle).
Handwriting-As students finish their cursive books, they'll be sent home so if you get it back, it can stay at home. Once finished, they'll start the cursive book 2 from Memoria Press, which I have for them. They're all working at their own pace: our goal is excellence not necessarily completion so it may be awhile yet before you see the other book completed.
Science-We're skipping chapter 9 in the book, which goes into how to plan and then plant your own garden. It is a very fun chapter and if you have the time, space and inclination, I encourage you to do it with your child, but it doesn't lend itself well to the classroom setting.
